Welcome to Iconic Photography. My name is Nicholas Brown and I am a Canberra wedding photographer. On the weekend of 11-12 October, 2014 I had the rare opportunity to photograph the wedding of Sharon and Gabriel, twice. Yes, twice on the same weekend. Gabe’s family were delayed flying in from the USA for the planned Saturday morning wedding at Hidden Valley B&B in Eumundi, Queensland and the celebrant wasn’t available on the Saturday afternoon. So, as they say in the classics, the couple said, the show must go on!
Gabe and Sharon looked on the bright side and recognised it was an opportunity to have two weddings: one unofficial wedding on Saturday with a party for all the guests and the official wedding on Sunday once Gabe’s family had arrived. The Master of Ceremonies, Stu, stepped in and performed the role of ‘celebrant’ magnificently on Saturday. Following the ceremony, Stu pronounced the couple as having exactly the same marital status as they had 30 minutes ago. Although they weren’t officially husband and wife, it certainly felt like they were. The ceremony was full of emotion, tears and laughter thanks to the Dr. Seuss reading of “Oh the places you will go” from Chris and Stu, and the reading from Sharon’s brother, Troy. The Sunday wedding was just as special, if not more so, with Gabe’s family present. This time Gabe’s nieces were the ring bearers and one of his sister’s read a reading.
For the reception, the guests gathered in a marquee on the grounds of the B&B for a picnic lunch and a game of frisbee. This gathering was quintessential Sharon and Gabe with guests sitting on handmade rugs and enjoying some homemade food include delicious pies. It was my pleasure to be able to experience and photograph the love these two people have for each other … twice.
The Sharon and Gabe Story
The story of Sharon and Gabe is a special one and I believe it is best told by the couple themselves. As Gabe recalls, he had reached a point in his life that he realised ‘flitting’ about was fun, but he thought that life could be even more fun if he had someone to flit about with. So Gabe took a serious course of action and integrated himself into the one activity that no woman could resist … playing Frisbee.
Once on the fields of frisbee he soon (caught the eye of/was vaguely known by/was repeatedly introduced to/saw) a confident, beautiful and brilliant woman, Sharon. Over the next few years, they grew closer and happier. A few years later they went hiking together in Alaska. Despite the snow, rain, eating with a bug head-net on, and Sharon carrying a pack weighing 35% of her bodyweight, she seemed to be enjoying herself. To Gabe, this meant it was time to “pop the question”. In the cold, rain and on wet rocks he awkwardly fumbled for the ring box and managed to ramble the phrase ‘will you marry me’ in a slurry of umm’s and ahh’s and soooo’s. Recognition soon dawned on Sharon’s face along with, not fear, but an awareness of something big, and Sharon, without missing a beat said, “Did you ask my Dad?”. Thank goodness for the pre-departure final hour phone call, Gabe!
