Welcome to Photo Love. This is the title I give to the blog posts I write about one photo and why I love it. Sometimes I love the photo because of the composition or lighting, while other times it is because of the story behind the photo. My favourite photos are when there is a combination of both. I hope you enjoy the story and the photo.
This is a photo of Michelle preparing for her wedding. Michelle and Alex were married at Black Barn Vineyards in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. As you can tell from the light on Michelle’s face, it was a brilliant summer’s day. Michelle was looking out the open double doors of Rush Cottage to the vineyard in the distance. Although Rush Cottage was reasonably dark, by having the doors open, the light was able to stream in and highlight Michelle as her makeup was being applied.
I was in the room next to Michelle taking some detail photos of her jewellery and listening to the makeup artist tell Michelle and her mum about the number of celebrities she had done make up for. She had even worked on the Lord of the Rings movies. She had some great stories that I am not permitted to repeat. It was during one of these stories I noticed Michelle laughing. I quickly spun around, slightly adjusted my aperture on the camera and then waited for another smile to appear before snapping this photo of Michelle through the doorway.
I like that the door is in the photo. I deliberately composed the photo this way because I think it gives the feeling that you are listening in on a story or a secret. If the door wasn’t in the frame, you would probably think that I was making Michelle laugh. Capturing a genuine laugh or smile is priceless and that is why I love this photo.
